Vintage Base Ball

Note the space between "base" and "ball" - the word "baseball" was not really seen as one word until the late 1800s. While bat and ball games have been around for thousands of years, the more modern version of "baseball" as we know it, is generally believed to have originated sometime in the first half of the 19th century, with both men's and women's school, recreational, and amateur "clubs" appearing around mid-century. It wasn't until after the American Civil War that baseball took a more "professional" turn towards what we know today.

[Present Day] Kingston Guards vs. Saugerties Vintage Base Ball Club Hosted by the Ulster County Historical Society, this annual event gathered a large crowd to see these two clubs face off using a rule set from the 1870s. Final score: 20-13 Kingston.
